Maria Wallace is a singer, songwriter and music promoter based in Yorkshire. She performs both original and traditional music – folk/roots, bluegrass and Americana, with a broad range of influences. Maria’s powerful voice can be big Maria singand bluesy or sweet and mellow as the song demands, but it’s always compelling and distinctive. In recent years, Maria has performed at numerous festivals with her bluegrass/ Americana collective The Reckless Abandoners and more recently with duo partner Phil Stott in Phrase & Fable, before the pandemic stopped real-life gigs. She has a powerful alto voice and performed at Celtic Connections festival ten years ago as part of Tim Eriksen’s concert featuring a group of Sacred Harp (shape note) singers.

Maria is also an award winning grassroots music promoter and booking agent under the True North Music banner. Since 2015 she has hosted around 50 gigs in Yorkshire, featuring some of the best bluegrass, Americana and folk artists from the USA, Canada and UK, and has booked multiple nationwide tours. In 2017 Maria won the Outstanding Promoter Award at the Yorkshire Gig Guide Grassroots Awards, and she was invited to Nashville in 2019 by the International Bluegrass Music Association to participate in the Leadership Bluegrass course. Maria is committed to improving gender parity and diversity in roots music – in her own event programming and booking roster, and across the wider music scene. True North Music was awarded Arts Council England funding twice in 2020 (Project Grants: Supporting Grassroots Live Music strand) to deliver live music events.

In addition to her music making, songwriting and music promotion, Maria remains an enthusiastic fan of and advocate for live music and independent musicians, and writes regular articles, reviews and interviews for a variety of roots music publications. Since the pandemic brought most real-life gigs and tours to a standstill, Maria has been working on ways to bring live music to her followers via online channels, including hosting her Fall into Autumn Virtual Festival in October 2020.
