Maria is a singer, songwriter and roots musician based in Yorkshire. Born in Manchester but with Irish heritage, Maria always liked a bit of traditional music and always loved to sing, but only started singing in public in recent years. Since picking up the 5-string banjo in 2008, she’s become more and more involved in the UK roots music scene, especially bluegrass, old time and Maria singAmericana. Maria also plays fiddle and guitar a little, but her main talent is in singing and songwriting. Maria’s powerful voice can be big and bluesy or sweet and mellow as the song demands, but it’s always distinctive. Maria has been writing songs since 2012 and performs some of her originals songs (plus some traditional songs &  creative covers) with her bluegrass/Americana band  The Reckless AbandonersMaria is also a powerful Sacred Harp (shape note) singer, as well as singing solo & with friends at sessions, open mics and festivals around the country.

In addition to songwriting, Maria writes regular reviews, previews, articles and interviews about her favourite artists and festivals, and is keen to support the grassroots music scene as a whole. There’s a great community out there of live music, concerts, sessions and festivals. You can read her writings on the blog pages here and on her other sites, as well as on Folk Radio UK and for publications like British Bluegrass News and Old Time News. Maria is also a grassroots music promoter and booking agent under the True North Music banner. She puts on gigs by touring bands – some of the best bluegrass, Americana and folk artists from the USA, Canada, UK & Ireland – in various venues across Yorkshire, and books full UK tours for a number of world class artists in these genres. Visit the True North Music website for full details on all upcoming tours and gigs.
